Minerals and mineralogy; general
Sites in this section typically have information on many minerals or are collections of
very diverse material. There are sub-groups for fluorescent minerals, crystallography and technical information, directory sites with
information on many species, individual species listed
alphabetically be species name, and then the rest, which
is not
bad, just did not fit in. Sites are listed alphabetically by name within each sub-group,
except for the section on individual species.

Athena Mineralogy
Very comprehensive site on mineral properties and systematics from
Université de Geneve. Includes an alphabetical list of minerals with formula and
system, Strunz classification, names of varieties, synonyms, foreign names, searchable
databases for names, elements, type locality, pictures of rare minerals, etc. Do check the
parent site at http://un2sg4.unige.ch/www/athena/ with other interesting
science information.
Cindy & Dave Barthelmy's database with 4205 mineral species and a
collection of links.
An ambitious project to provide species lists for worldwide mineral localities.
It is very extensive and also lists properties of minerals and offers news groups.
Dealers' site with fairly comprehensive information on at least some mineral
species and cursory mention of others.
Comprehensive database with over 4000 mineral descriptions, crystallography, X-
ray powder diffraction, chemical composition, physical and optical properties, new Dana
classification, Strunz classification, and links to other sources of mineral data on
WWW.
Alphabetical Mineral Reference from the University of Wisconsin mineral
database with occassional amusing quirks: 'Ammonite ... shell replaced by pyrite!' I
could have sworn it was a fossil cephalopod.
WebMineral is a Java based website with nice mineral pictures, mineral
descriptions and physical properties, though some records are empty (seemingly updated
to 1997)
The Fluorescent Mineral Society organises mineralogists, gemologists, amateur
collectors, and others who study and collect fluorescent minerals. The site is mostly
information about the society, but does present an explanation of fluorescence, links to
dealers and a bibliography with approximately 40 references. It claims an on-line
display of fluorescent minerals and localities producing fluorescent minerals, but it is
only for members of the society.
Description of many minerals from
Franklin and Sterling Hill, New Jersey, many of which fluoresce. On-line version of
Palache, Charles. 1935. The minerals of Franklin and Sterling Hill, Sussex County,
New Jersey. Geological Survey Professional Paper, 180
Description and illustration of fluorescent minerals from different localities. More
open to general users than The Fluorescent Mineral Society.
Description and illustration of fluorescent minerals, bibliography, explanation of
fluorescence.
Description and illustration of fluorescent minerals.
Information on colour in minerals and access to data on mineral absorption
spectra in the visible and infrared regions of the spectrum and Raman spectra of
minerals.
Excellent introduction to crystallography, very pedagogic.
This is a great site to help visualize many of the concepts of crystallography and to
get assistance on teaching crystallography. Also offers DOS software and an introduction
to Quasicrystals
This is pure gemology, but describes properties that are important for mineral
collectors and has some basic locality information as well.Teaching notes available.

Teaching resources on mineralogy for elementary school teachers. Not very
comprehensive but a very commendable effort. Designed for the US school system, but
that does not mean the rest of us can not use it for inspiration.
Photos of many mineral species - and for once of "normal specimens", not the
"once-in-a-lifetime-museum-specimens". Commendable, just wish there was a little more
actual information on the specimens or the minerals.Minerals and mineralogy; specific localities or local areas
Sites in this section describe one or several localities or larger areas (e.g., states or
provinces). Sites are listed alphabetically by the name of the country followed by the
locality with occasional interspersed states or provinces.

(Namibia, Tsumeb) Behind the rather nondescript name hides the commendable
effort to re-open the Tsumeb mine with an emphasis on mining mineral specimens! The
web site stinks - no information, no owner's name, no address, etc., just a box for
entering your information "and then we will contact you." Well, the people behind it are
OK, they are well-known in the business but a bit shy about the current looks of their
site. Enter your e-mail address, and they will actually tell you more and you will not be
inundated by "home-loan offers even if you have bad credit" or offers to buy photos of
scantily clad women.

also sells nice minerals.
(Russia) Beautiful site with very few photos, seemingly with discussion of several
Russian mineral localities. I wish I understood some of it, but the site is entirely in
Russian, which I can not read. The web design is excellent though, the Cyrillic
characters show up unadulterated on a PC set for Thai character recognition!

numerous mineral photos from the localities.

WWW access to
some articles. The April 1998 issue (follow path through links of the site) has a good
description of the Junnila Mine by Scott Kleine who operates the mine, sells specimens
and offers fee collecting. This is the source of the World's best Fresnoite crystals (which
does not necessarily say a lot, but these are spectacular specimens!) as well as Benitoite,
Bario-orthojoaquinite, etc.

name 'www.pegmatite.com' we get the news on a pegmatite claim in southeastern San
Diego County, producing smoky Quartz, Spessartine and Beryl.
(USA, California, San Diego County, Carmelita Mine) San Diego Mineral
Development operates the Carmelita mine. Regrettanly a poor web design (e.g., images
cover text) but interesting area pegmatites.

Colorado (Bonanza, Devil's Head, Lake George, Mount Antero, Ruby Mountain,
Stoneham) including evaluations on how suitable the sites are for children and families.
You are kidding !?! Somebody actually believes in recruiting new members to the hobby
?
